Teaching & Learning

The Teaching and Learning Department is committed to ensuring that every student has access to rigorous, engaging, and equitable learning opportunities. Our work centers on developing curriculum and instructional systems, aligning district and school improvement processes, integrating technology into learning, managing Title Grants, and supporting student engagement. We strive to create systems that provide equitable access and high expectations for all learners, from our youngest students through graduation.

At the heart of our work is Teacher Clarity—helping students know what they are learning, why it matters, and how they can demonstrate their understanding. Beyond clarity, we are committed to advancing strong instructional practices across every subject and grade level. This includes supporting literacy and math achievement, accelerating learning for students who need it most, expanding access to advanced coursework, and ensuring inclusive practices are embedded in every classroom. We partner with national experts and organizations to provide coaching, professional learning, and guidance in areas such as effective instructional strategies, curriculum implementation, and high-quality classroom practices. By equipping educators with the tools, support, and professional growth they need, we strengthen the teaching and learning experience across the district.

Together—with teachers, principals, families, and community partners—we are building learning environments where all students can thrive. Our goal is simple but powerful: coherent systems, engaged learners, and improved achievement for every child.

  • Our district is dedicated to providing all students with a high-quality education that prepares them for future success. Teaching and learning are guided by several key components:

    • College and Career Readiness – The Pace Framework guides  districtwide approach that supports personalized learning, continuous growth, and high expectations for every student.
    • Assessments – A balanced system of assessments is used to monitor progress, inform instruction, and ensure students are meeting learning goals.
    • Curricular Resources – Teachers utilize research-based resources and instructional materials aligned to Illinois Learning Standards to support meaningful and engaging classroom experiences.
    • Grade Level Standards – Instruction is guided by clearly defined standards at each grade level, ensuring consistency, rigor, and readiness for future learning.
    • Instructional Technology & SOPPA – Technology is integrated into daily instruction to enhance learning and prepare students with essential digital skills. In compliance with the Student Online Personal Protection Act (SOPPA), the district also ensures the protection and privacy of student data when using educational technology and online resources.

Together, these elements provide a strong foundation for student achievement and help us partner with families in supporting every child’s learning journey.

  • The Accelerated Placement Program (APP) is part of the Multi-Tiered System of Support, which differentiates instruction to meet students’ individual needs. APP allows students to access content and instruction at a pace suited to their readiness, and it is open to any student demonstrating high ability, not just those identified as gifted.

Accelerated placement can include early entrance to kindergarten or first grade, advancing in one or more individual subjects, full grade advancement, or advancement through Competency-Based Education (CBE). The district has a process to evaluate students for possible accelerated placement and identify those who may benefit from it.
